Modems

Friday, January 29, 2016 Posted by Sandeep Kumar Jha

A modem modulates outgoing digital signals from a computer or other digital device to analog signals for a conventional copper twisted pair telephone line and demodulates the incoming analog signal and converts it to a digital signal for the digital device.

Modems are small box like devices used in dial up network connections.

Types of Modems

Onboard Modems
Onboard Modem is a Modem that is built onto the computer motherboard. These Modems cannot be removed, but can be disabled through a Jumper or CMOS Setup.

Internal Modem
Internal Modem connects to a PCI slot inside a newer desktop computer or ISA slot on an older computer. The Internal Modem shown at the beginning of this document is an example of a PCI Modem.

External Modem
External Modem is located within a box and is hooked up externally to the computer, usually the Serial Ports or USB port. The picture is an example of an external USRobotics Modem.
