CAD File Format

CAD is an image file format used by AutoCAD. AutoCAD was created by AutoDesk, and creates 2-D and 3-D designs.

CAD files hold information for 2-D or 3-D images, as well as drafting information. CAD stands for Computer Aided Design.

File Format

DWG

DWG (from drawing) is a proprietary binary file format used for storing two- and three- dimensional design data and metadata.

It is the native format for several CAD packages including DraftSight, AutoCAD, IntelliCAD


It contains all the pieces of information a user enters, such as

  • Designs
  • Geometric data
  • Maps
  • Photos







IFC

The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) data model is intended to describe building and construction industry data.




DXF 

DXF is a file extension for a graphic image format typically used with AutoCAD (Computer Assisted Drafting) software. DXF stands for Drawing exchange Format. Since its initial release in 1982, there have been many changes to the DXF file format specifications. 




VRML

VRML is a graphics file format used by Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML).

VRML files are used for 3-D information, primarily on web pages.


These files contain information regarding the graphics of the site, such as sounds, animations, lighting, and objects.



SVG

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is an XML-based vector image format that allows three types of graphic objects vector graphics, raster graphics, and text.
